What Is Medical Payments Insurance?

Updated: January 2022

Medical Payments coverage (MedPay) offers coverage for your medical expenses regardless of who is at fault in an accident. This extends to when you are a passenger in a car involved in an accident as well. It covers hospitalization fees, ambulance fees, rehabilitation costs, and in some cases copays for other health insurance policies.

MedPay is very similar to personal injury protection (PIP), as both provide medical coverage to the policyholder regardless of fault. There are a couple of major differences, however:

  • Where They’re Available: MedPay is available in all states except Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, and Oregon. PIP is only available in 21 states.
  • What They Cover: In most ways, both MedPay and PIP cover the same situations. The main differences here are that PIP covers lost wages while MedPay does not, and MedPay covers health insurance copays and deductibles, while PIP does not.

Is MedPay Part of State Minimum Insurance?

This depends on where you live. MedPay is only required as a part of the state minimum in Maine and Pennsylvania. In New Hampshire, where car insurance itself is not mandated, residents that do opt to get insured are required to include MedPay in their insurance package.

If MedPay isn’t required by your state but is an option where you live, it might be a good idea to take it into consideration. State minimum requirements often do not provide enough coverage in the event of a serious accident, meaning drivers that only purchase the state minimum are at risk of financial burden if they are involved in a major accident. Medical expenses can be incredibly expensive, particularly if you don’t have a great healthcare policy to begin with. If you do not want to risk any sudden medical bills after an accident, MedPay is something to look into.
