State Minimum Car Insurance
Nearly every state requires a minimum amount of car insurance to be legally allowed to drive. Depending on where you live, the amount and types of coverage you need will vary.
Most states require some level of liability insurance. Liability covers the other party in the event you cause an accident. No-fault states, which include 12 states plus Washington D.C., also usually require medical payments (MedPay) or personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, which cover medical costs. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may also be required.

Minimum Coverage Requirements by State
State minimum coverage requirements vary wildly between states. Different states require both different types of coverage and different amounts of coverage. For example, a liability state might have a state minimum of 30/50/15 -- or $30,000 in bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 in bodily injury liability per accident, and $15,000 in property damage liability. There are states that require more than just liability insurance as well.
Given how different each state’s standards are, it’s important that you keep up with the state minimum standards of your state in particular. Find your state’s minimum requirements below:

Is State Minimum Coverage Enough?
State minimum insurance can cover you in a minor accident but may not be enough for anything more serious. When considering medical bills, property damages, and lawsuits, a car accident with injuries could easily cost $100,000 or more, depending on the severity.
Though state minimum insurance will have the lowest rates and premiums, purchasing a policy with greater or full coverage can provide more peace of mind, and in the event of an accident, make more financial sense in the long run. For those in a liability state, aiming for coverage around 100/300/50 -- or $100,000 in bodily injury per person, $300,000 in bodily injury per accident, and $50,000 in property damage -- is often recommended. Note that opting for a higher deductible and making sure that you take advantage of all available discounts could help make your premium more affordable when purchasing higher coverage.
